We have had two ‘24/7’ prayer days in members homes where we have gathered from 9a.m. to 9 p.m. to prayer for the community around those homes.
We have embarked on a week of prayer using High Littleton Methodist Church and working in hourly shifts - longer over night - to cover the full 24/7 period from 9 p.m. on 2nd April to 9.p.m. on 9th April. We invited all denominations in the area to be part of this time of prayer.
The Methodist Church starts a year of prayer in June, so our sessions are a foretaste, and we’re the first in this district.
Co-organiser Rev Jill Flowers said: “We believe that when people pray, it makes a difference".
“An hour may seem like a long time to pray but you’d be amazed how quickly the time goes. It’s a chance to meet with God, to think, to pray for yourself, the world, for others – everyone is welcome to join in,” says Rev. Mandy Stevens.
The 24-7 Prayer Movement was started by a group of young Christians in Chichester who set up the first prayer room. The idea has now spread all over the world with prayer rooms opening in countries as diverse as Sweden, Japan, Australia, the USA and Germany. However it’s not a new idea – the first group took its inspiration from the constant prayer offered in monasteries, as well as groups like the Moravians, who inspired the founder of Methodism, John Wesley.
